  • Walked through large burn area that was still smoldering on the ridges
  • Climbed almost the entire day from the car to the campsite (in forest a lot of today)
  • Forest very open with radioactive green moss all over
  • Fun arriving early and having time to do whatever (we are now in bed at 8:05pm)

-- Day 2

  • Route Overview: Sawtooth Lake --> North Fork River --> Baron Lakes --> Alpine Lake --> Redfish Lake Creek (7360')
  • Ate breakfast at North Fork River crossing (Molly fell in the creek at breakfast)
  • Smoky in A.M., but cleared up in the afternoon
  • Saw deer (hopped like a rabbit)
  • Water color at Baron Lake was amazing (like the Bahamas)
  • Great swimming hole at campsite (Redfish Lake Creek)
  • Peaks were made of pink granite

-- Day 3

  • Route Overview: Cramer Lake --> Hidden Lake --> Virginia Lake --> Edna Lake --> Vernon Lake --> Ardeth Lake --> Spangle Lake --> Rock Slide Lake --> Smith Falls (camped above falls, 7100')
  • Ate breakfast at the outlet to Hidden Lake
  • Saw light yellow and fuchsia Indian Paintbrush flowers
  • Met 2 forest rangers from Missoula, MT and Corvallis, OR (he said Eugene, OR was his home town, but both Portland and Eugene were cool towns)
  • Ate lunch at Ingeborg Lake - Brian swam
  • Really cool granite slab creek coming out of Benedict Lake
  • We went for a swim above Smith Falls at the end of a long day of hiking

-- Day 4

  • Route Overview: Elk Lake --> Fern Falls --> Grandjean Trailhead (5184')
  • Long gradual downhill
  • Fern Falls - cool, granite-slab waterfalls
  • Saw black bear (up steep hillside with lots of brush) near the start of the day. It took off up the hillside even though it was at least 100 yards away.
